During the week of January 6-12, 2003, Big Island police arrested 12 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident, and one was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 19 DUI arrests, compared to 26 during the same period last year, a decrease of 27 percent.
There have been 73 major accidents so far this year, compared to 60 during the same period last year, an increase of 22 percent.
There have been two traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to none during the same period last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
