During the week of January 24-30, 2000, Big Island police arrested 36 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.
So far this year, there have been 123 DUI arrests, a 52 percent increase over the 81 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 33 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 189, compared to 167 during the same period last year, an increase of 13 percent.
There have been two traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to one during the same period last year, an increase of 100 percent.
Both of the traffic fatalities were alcohol-related.
