During the week of January 27-February 2, 2003, Big Island police arrested 20 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident, and two were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 59 DUI arrests, compared to 66 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11 percent.
There have been 193 major accidents so far this year, compared to 183 during the same period last year, an increase of 5 percent.
There have been two traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to one during the same period last year, and increase of 100 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
