During the week of February 21-27, 2000, Big Island police arrested 25 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.
So far this year, there have been 219 DUI arrests, a 39 percent increase over the 157 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 36 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 339, compared to 325 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent.
There have been six traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to one during the same period last year, an increase of 500 percent.
Two of this year’s six traffic fatalities, or 33 percent, have been alcohol-related.
