During the week of February 25-March 3, 2002, Big Island police arrested 12 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and two were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 144 DUI arrests, a 16 percent decrease from the 171 arrested during the same period last year.
There have been 367 major accidents so far this year, compared to 383 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4 percent.
There have been seven traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to one fatality during the same period last year, an increase of 600 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is two, compared to none during the same period last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
