During the week of February 26-March 4, 2001, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in traffic accidents, and five were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 173 DUI arrests, a 24 percent decrease from the 229 arrested during the same period last year.
There have been 387 major accidents so far this year, compared to 378 during the same period last year, an increase of 2 percent.
There has been one traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to six during the same period last year, a decrease of 83 percent.
