During the week of March 7-13, 2005, Big Island police arrested 15 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions and one was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 147 DUI arrests, compared to 195 during the same period last year, a decrease of 25 percent. The number of arrests by district were:

There have been 361 major accidents so far this year, compared to 444 during the same period last year, a decrease of 19 percent.
There have been 10 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to eight for the same period last year, an increase of 19 percent. There have been no alcohol-related fatalities so far this year, compared to four at this time last year, a decrease of 100 percent. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to two at the same time last year, a decrease of 100 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
