MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of March 22-28, 2004, Big Island police arrested 14 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, and four were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 231 DUI arrests, compared to 169 during the same period last year, an increase of 37 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 588 major accidents so far this year, compared to 527 during the same period last year, an increase of 12 percent.

There have been 15 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to four for the same period last year, an increase of 275 percent. There have been no fatalities attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to two at this time last year. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to two at the same time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
