During the week of March 20-26, 2000, Big Island police arrested 29 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.
So far this year, there have been 305 DUI arrests, a 3 percent decrease from the 313 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 49 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 518, compared to 484 during the same period last year, an increase of 7 percent.
There have been seven traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to three during the same period last year, an increase of 133 percent.
Two of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 29 percent, have been alcohol-related.
