MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of March 29-April 4, 2004, Big Island police arrested 25 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, and two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 256 DUI arrests, compared to 188 during the same period last year, an increase of 36 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 641 major accidents so far this year, compared to 568 during the same period last year, an increase of 13 percent.

There have been 15 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to six for the same period last year, an increase of 150 percent. There have been no fatalities attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to three at this time last year. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to two at the same time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
