During the week of April 7-13, 2003, Big Island police arrested 18 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions.
So far this year, there have been 210 DUI arrests, compared to 232 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9 percent.
There have been 634 major accidents so far this year, compared to 625 during the same period last year, an increase of 1 percent.
There have been seven fatalities so far this year, compared to 14 for the same period last year, a decrease 50 percent. There has been one fatality attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to five DUI-related fatalities at this time last year, a decrease of 80 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
