During the week of April 8-14, 2002, Big Island police arrested nine motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and one was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 233 DUI arrests, a 3 percent increase over the 226 arrested during the same period last year.
There have been 631 major accidents so far this year, compared to 661 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent.
There have been 14 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to seven during the same period last year, an increase of 100 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to two during the same period last year, an increase of 50 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
