During the week of April 11-17, 2005, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, and four were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 220 DUI arrests, compared to 298 during the same period last year, a decrease of 26 percent. The number of arrests by district were:

There have been 524 major accidents so far this year, compared to 727 during the same period last year, a decrease of 28 percent.

There have been 12 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 17 for the same period last year, a decrease of 29 percent. There have been no alcohol-related fatalities so far this year, compared to five at this time last year, a decrease of 100 percent. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to six at the same time last year, a decrease of 100 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
