During the week of May 14-20, 2002, Big Island police arrested 16 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and three were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 301 DUI arrests, compared to 309 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3 percent.
There have been 829 major accidents so far this year, compared to 892 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7 percent.
There have been 14 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 12 during the same period last year, an increase of 17 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to four during the same period last year, a decrease of 25 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
