During the week of April 24-30, 2000, Big Island police arrested 20 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.
So far this year, there have been 403 DUI arrests, a 10 percent decrease from the 446 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 38 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 714, compared to 702 during the same period last year, an increase of 2 percent.
There have been 10 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to four during the same period last year, an increase of 150 percent.
Four of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 40 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related.
