During the week of May 30-June 5, 2005, Big Island police arrested 12 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash, and two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 319 DUI arrests, compared to 453 during the same period last year, a decrease of 30 percent. The number of arrests by district were:

There have been 717 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,054 during the same period last year, a decrease of 32 percent.

There have been 15 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 20 for the same period last year, a decrease of 32 percent. There have been eight alcohol-related fatalities so far this year, compared to six at this time last year, an increase of 33 percent. There have been two drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to nine at the same time last year, a decrease of 78 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
