During the week of June 3-9, 2002, Big Island police arrested 16 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents and one was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 353 DUI arrests, compared to 332 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.
There have been 953 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,010 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6 percent.
There have been 14 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 14 during the same period last year. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to five during the same period last year, a decrease of 40 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
