During the week of June 9-15, 2003, Big Island police arrested 27 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions, and four were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 417 DUI arrests, compared to 366 during the same period last year, an increase of 14 percent.
There have been 1,019 major accidents so far this year, compared to 988 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.
There have been 14 fatalities so far this year, compared to 14 for the same period last year. There has been one fatality attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to five DUI-related fatalities at this time last year, a decrease of 80 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
