During the week of July 8-14, 2002, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents.
So far this year, there have been 466 DUI arrests, compared to 405 during the same period last year, an increase of 15 percent.
There have been 1,155 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,202 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4 percent.
There have been 14 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 18 during the same period last year, a decrease of 22 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to nine during the same period last year, a decrease of 67 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
