During the week of July 21-27, 2003, Big Island police arrested 24 motorists for drunk driving. Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions, and eight were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 552 DUI arrests, compared to 500 during the same period last year, an increase of 10 percent.
There have been 1,286 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,218 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.
There have been 16 fatalities so far this year, compared to 15 for the same period last year, an increase of 7 percent. There has been one fatality attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to five DUI-related fatalities at this time last year, a decrease of 80 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
