During the week of July 22-28, 2002, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was younger than 21.
So far this year, there have been 502 DUI arrests, compared to 440 during the same period last year, an increase of 14 percent.
There have been 1,221 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,289 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent.
There have been 15 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 18 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to nine during the same period last year, a decrease of 67 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
