During the week of July 25-31, 2005, Big Island police arrested 21 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, and one was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there has been a revised total of 600 DUI arrests, compared to 604 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1 percent. The number of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,370 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,416 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3 percent.

There have been 19 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 25 for the same period last year, a decrease of 24 percent. There have been 12 alcohol-related fatalities so far this year, compared to seven at this time last year, an increase of 71 percent. There have been nine drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to 11 at the same time last year, a decrease of 18 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
