During the week of August 26-September 1, 2002, Big Island police arrested 26 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and one was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 576 DUI arrests, compared to 531 during the same period last year, an increase of 8 percent.

There have been 1,460 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,532 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent.

There have been 18 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 20 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to 10 during the same period last year, a decrease of 70 percent. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to two during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
