During the week of September 5-12, 2005, Big Island police arrested 14 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash, and one of the drivers was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there has been a revised total of 742 DUI arrests, compared to 731 during the same period last year, a increase of 2 percent. The number of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,647 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,698 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3 percent.
There have been 28 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 29 for the same period last year, a decrease of 3 percent. There have been 13 alcohol-related fatalities so far this year, compared to eight at this time last year, an increase of 63 percent. There have been nine drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to 11 at the same time last year, a decrease of 18 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
