During the week of September 11-17, 2000, Big Island police arrested 16 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and three were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 865 DUI arrests, an increase of 0.12 percent over the 864 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 48 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,556, compared to 1,516 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.
There have been 30 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 22 during the same period last year, an increase of 30 percent.
Six of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 20 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and one has been confirmed as being drug-related.
