During the week of September 15-21, 2003, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions, and three were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 727 DUI arrests, compared to 618 during the same period last year, an increase of 18 percent.
There have been 1,706 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,612 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.
There have been 23 fatalities so far this year, compared to 19 for the same period last year, an increase of 21 percent. There have been two fatalities attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to five DUI-related fatalities at this time last year, a decrease of 60 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
