During the week of September 23-29, 2002, Big Island police arrested 11 motorists for drunk driving. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and two were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 629 DUI arrests, compared to 602 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent.
There have been 1,652 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,698 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3 percent.
There have been 19 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 21 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to 11 during the same period last year, a decrease of 73 percent. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to two during the same period last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
