During the week of September 29-October 5, 2003, Big Island police arrested 18 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions, and one was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 767 DUI arrests, compared to 648 during the same period last year, an increase of 18 percent.
There have been 1,792 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,695 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.
There have been 24 fatalities so far this year, compared to 19 for the same period last year, an increase of 26 percent. There have been five fatalities attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to the same number at this time last year. There has been one drug-related fatality so far this year, compared to none at the same time last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
