During the week of October 23-29, 2000, Big Island police arrested 14 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and one was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 966 DUI arrests, a decrease of 2 percent from the 984 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 38 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,804, compared to 1,762 during the same period last year, an increase of 2 percent.
There have been 30 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 26 during the same period last year, an increase of 15 percent.
Seven of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 23 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and one has been confirmed as being drug-related.
