During the week of October 27 – November 2, 2003, Big Island police arrested 12 motorists for drunk driving. One driver was involved in traffic collision, and one was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 859 DUI arrests, compared to 738 during the same period last year, an increase of 15 percent.
There have been 1,941 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,880 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.
There have been 31 fatalities so far this year, compared to 22 for the same period last year, an increase of 41 percent.
There have been four fatalities attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to seven at this time last year, a decrease of 43 percent. There have been two drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to none at the same time last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
