During the week of October 29-November 4, 2001, Big Island police arrested 20 motorists for drunk driving. Thirteen of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and two were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 684 DUI arrests, a 30 percent decrease from the 975 arrested during the same period last year.
There have been 1,913 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,855 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.
There have been 24 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 32 during the same period last year, a decrease of 25 percent. Six of the traffic fatalities this year were related to driving while intoxicated, compared to 12 at the same time last year, a decrease of 45 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
