During the week of November 4-10, 2002, Big Island police arrested 13 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 750 DUI arrests, compared to 692 during the same period last year, an increase of 8 percent.

There have been 1,927 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,945 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1 percent.

There have been 26 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 25 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is nine, compared to 13 during the same period last year, a decrease of 31 percent. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to two during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
