During the week of December 2-8, 2002, Big Island police arrested 21 motorists for drunk driving. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and one was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 816 DUI arrests, compared to 748 during the same period last year, an increase of 9 percent.

There have been 2,098 major accidents so far this year, compared to 2,118 during the same period last year, a decrease of nearly 1 percent.

There have been 26 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 27 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is nine, compared to 13 during the same period last year, a decrease of 31 percent. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to three during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
