During the week of December 3-9, 2001, Big Island police arrested 15 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents.
So far this year, there have been 751 DUI arrests, a 28 percent decrease from the 1,037 arrested during the same period last year.
There have been 2,124 major accidents so far this year, compared to 2,051 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent.
There have been 28 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 37 during the same period last year, a decrease of 24 percent. Twelve of the traffic fatalities this year were related to driving while intoxicated, compared to 14 at the same time last year, a decrease of 14 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
