During the week of December 18-25, 2000, Big Island police arrested 16 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were arrested after being involved in traffic accidents, and one driver was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 1,063 DUI arrests, a decrease of 7 percent from the 1,176 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 37 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 2,032, compared to 2,120 during the same period last year, an increase of .6 percent.
There have been 38 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 31 during the same period last year, an increase of 22 percent.
Eleven of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 30 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and three have been confirmed as being drug-related.
