During the week of December 23-29, 2002, Big Island police arrested 13 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and two were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 864 DUI arrests, compared to 830 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent.
There have been 2,247 major accidents so far this year, compared to 2,264 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1 percent.
There have been 28 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 31 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is nine, compared to 15 during the same period last year, a decrease of 40 percent. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to three during the same period last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
