During the week of March 22-29, 1999, Big Island police arrested 47 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.
So far this year, there have been 324 DUI arrests, a 43 percent increase over the 226 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 35 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 494, compared to 530 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7 percent.
There have been three traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to eight fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 63 percent.
There have been no alcohol-related traffic fatalities so far this year, compared to three at the same time last year.
