During the week of April 23-30, 2001, Big Island police arrested 14 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents and two were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 251 DUI arrests, a 37 percent decrease from the 401 arrested during the same period last year.
There have been 769 major accidents so far this year, compared to 713 during the same period last year, an increase of 8 percent.
There have been 10 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 10 during the same period last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
