During the week of April 12-18, 1999, Big Island police arrested 20 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.
So far this year, there have been 404 DUI arrests, a 38 percent increase over the 292 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 50 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 635, compared to 668 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent.
There have been three traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 11 fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 73 percent.
There have been no alcohol-related traffic fatalities so far this year, compared to three at the same time last year.
