During the week of June 14-20, 1999, Big Island police arrested 20 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.
So far this year, there have been 633 DUI arrests, a 41 percent increase over the 448 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 39 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1007, compared to 1,079 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7 percent.
There have been 10 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 19 fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 47 percent.
There have been four recorded alcohol-related traffic fatalities so far this year, compared to nine at the same time last year, a decrease of 56 percent.
