During the week of June 27-July 3, 2006, Big Island police arrested 33 motorists for drunk driving. Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and two were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been a total of 595 DUI arrests compared with a revised total of 499 during the same period last year, an increase of 19 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There has been a revised total of 1,277 major accidents so far this year, compared with a revised total of 1,226 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent.
There has been a total of 18 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared with 16 for the same period last year, an increase of 13 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
