During the week of July 22, 2013, through July 28, 2013, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 27 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 705 DUI arrests compared with 781 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.7 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 784 major accidents so far this year compared with 841 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.8 percent.

So far this year, there were 19 traffic fatalities on Hawaiʻi Island compared with 21 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.5 percent.

To date, four fatalities were related to drugs only (1), alcohol only (1), or a combination of both (2).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
