During the week of August 12, 2013, through August 18, 2013, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 30 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 792 DUI arrests compared with 878 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.8 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 853 major accidents so far this year compared with 926 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.9 percent.

So far this year, there were 21 traffic fatalities on Hawaiʻi Island compared with 24 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12.5 percent.

To date, eight fatalities were related to drugs only (3), alcohol only (1), or a combination of both (4).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
