During the week of September 2, 2008, through September 8, 2008, Big Island police arrested 20 motorists for drunk driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. Three were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 955 DUI arrests compared with 900 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,222 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,459 during the same period last year, a decrease of 16 percent.
So far this year, there have been 19 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 26 during the same period last year, a decrease of 27 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
