During the week of September 9, 2013, through September 15, 2013, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 26 motorists for drunk driving. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 905 DUI arrests compared with 995 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 956 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,049 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.9 percent.

So far this year, there were 21 traffic fatalities on Hawaiʻi Island compared with 30 during the same period last year, a decrease of 30 percent.

To date, 12 fatalities were related to drugs only (5), alcohol only (1), or a combination of both (6).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
