During the week of September 13-19, 1999, Big Island police arrested 22 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was arrested for DUI after being involved in a traffic accident.
So far this year, there have been 868 DUI arrests, a 20 percent increase over the 726 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 30 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,520, compared to 1,615 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6 percent.
There have been 22 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 27 fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 19 percent.
Seven of the fatalities this year have been alcohol-related, compared to 12 at the same time last year, a decrease of 42 percent. One of the fatalities this year was also drug-related.
