MEDIA RELEASE CORRECTION
During the week of October 4-10, 1999, Big Island police arrested 25 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.
So far this year, there have been 932 DUI arrests, an 18 percent increase over the 789 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 42 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,648, compared to 1,742 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent.
There have been 24 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 30 fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 20 percent.
Seven of the fatalities this year have been alcohol-related, compared to 14 at the same time last year, a decrease of 50 percent. One of the fatalities this year was also drug-related.
