Big Island police made 1,069 drunken driving arrests in 2005, a decrease of 2 percent from the the 1,086 (revised figure) arrested in 2004, according to statistics released by the Traffic Services Section.

Of the drivers arrested for DUI in 2005, 110 were involved in traffic crashes and 111 were under the age of 21.

There were 2,393 (revised figure) major accidents recorded in 2005, compared with 2,477 during the same period in 2004, a decrease of 3 percent.

There were 36 traffic fatalities on the Big Island in 2005 compared with 41 for the previous year, a decrease of 12 percent. There were 23 (revised figure) fatalities attributed to drunk driving in 2005 compared with 17 in 2004, an increase of 35 percent. There were 14 (revised figure) drug-related fatalities in 2005 compared with 21 (revised figure) in 2004, a decrease of 33 percent.

The number of fatal crashes declined slightly in 2005 — 29 compared with 33 the previous year — for a decrease of 12 percent.

In 2005, one victim was younger than 21, compared with six in 2004, a decrease of 83 percent.
