MEDIA RELEASE

A man and wife visiting from the Netherlands were robbed Monday (May 15, 2000) at Isaac Hale Beach Park in Pohoiki, Puna.

Investigators learned that the husband, 29, and his wife, 26, from Groningen, Netherlands, were at the warm pond in the park when they were approached about 3 p.m. by two males.

The suspects demanded money. When the couple refused, one of the suspects grabbed a red backpack, and the husband started struggling with him. The other suspect then picked up a large stone and threatened the husband with it. The suspects then fled toward Red Road with the backpack, which contained a passport, a camera and about $100 in U.S. currency.

Neither of the visitors was injured in the incident.

The suspects were described as dark-complexioned local males, both slim in build. The taller suspect, about 5-feet-7, wore a blue baseball cap.

Anyone with information about the incident or the identity of the suspects is asked to call Officer Greg Yamada of the Puna Patrol at 966-5835.
