Big Island police are seeking the public’s help in apprehending the thief or thieves who stole 29 solar panels at an emergency radio relay station at Manuka Beach in the Ka’u District.

Kona Criminal Investigation Section detectives said the panels were stolen sometime between 4:30 p.m. Friday, July 14, and 7:45 a.m. Monday, July 17, 2000.

The panels, valued at a total of $18,000, were located in a remote area with a radio tower surrounded by a fence and accessible only by a four-wheel drive vehicle.

The panels are described as being 3 feet long, 2 feet wide and three-quarters of an inch thick. The blue glass panels weigh from 5 to 7 pounds each.

Anyone with information about the theft or the identities of the thieves is asked to call police at 935-3311.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 329-8181 in Kona or 961-8300. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property. Crime Stoppers neither subscribes to “Caller ID,” nor does it record phone calls.
